August Leming, PhD

Founder, CEO

Dr. August Leming is a life-long student of the human experience. He learned early on that the world can sometimes be a dangerous place. A history of childhood trauma and difficulty making sense of his experience provided fertile ground for a much needed deeper look at what this life has to offer. Earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy from Columbia University, August was introduced to the study of Buddhism in 1989 under Robert Thurman. Unbeknownst to him, this introduction would play a major part in his life for decades to come. For several years after graduation, August traveled the globe in his efforts to find a semblance of peace. A number of continents later, he found himself back home, exhausted from years of use and abuse of alcohol and drugs. Compulsivity having taken its toll, August returned at 360 pounds, jobless and without direction. A simple scene from Shawshank Redemption motivated him to turn his not yet identified alcoholic obsession towards bodybuilding. Three years later, he stood at 200 pounds, eating disordered, no less fearful but now capable of selling his obsession as, of all things, a health coach. Alcohol would soon become a part of the picture again, and by the age of 28, August had finally reached bottom. Getting sober meant going back to school, a safer place, as he was always a high achieving academic. What was intended to be a two-year Masters program at Seton Hall University, evolved into a seven-year Doctorate in Counseling Psychology. While studying at Seton Hall, August served as an Adjunct Professor, teaching Child Psychology, Adolescent Psychology and Statistics on both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He did extensive research in adolescent aggression, racial identity, spirituality in counseling, meditation and personality development. As part of his Doctoral training, August worked in the NJ prison system where he developed a Family Services Program and worked extensively with populations impacted by violence, trauma and addiction. Dr. Leming’s dissertation – Happy, Joyous and Free: An Exploration of the Relationship between Affiliation with Alcoholics Anonymous and Quality of Life allowed for extensive research into the history, effectiveness and underlying methodology of 12 Step Recovery programs.

Sober since 2000, August has continued his Buddhist studies since first beginning in 1989. He has attended multiple week-long retreats and has taught meditation around the world in his work with nonprofits, corporations, universities and athletic programs.  His first-of-its-kind compassion-based model of high performance has allowed him to work with organizations across the United States, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and New Zealand. August has been an invited speaker at Yale University, Princeton University, Williams College, University of Virginia, Bucknell University and University of Washington, among many other academic institutions.

While educated at some of the country’s most elite colleges and universities, August values the wisdom of life experience above all else. Knowledge can be helpful, but wisdom is useful. Being given the opportunity to both learn from his confusion and to experience what the world offers as success and failure, August understands an uncommonly wide range of human experiences. The Living Room at Princeton and its team of amazing human beings is Dr. Leming’s greatest joy. The Living Room was established to provide sanctuary for clinicians and clients alike. It’s a physical space that invites spiritual healing through the constant reminder that “There’s nowhere to go.”  More than anything else, August’s strange and oftentimes painful journey has made one thing very clear: this very moment is all we have. The Living Room’s greatest hope is that our team and members will learn to commit more fully to the experience of NOW and learn to meet it with a kind and loving heart…regardless of what it holds.

John Prugh

Chief Strategy Officer

John brings to the Living Room over 25 years of experience in business leadership. Having managed a number of major retailers across the country, he knows and understands the beauty and art of team building, communication and operations. In his role as Chief Strategy Officer, John sees the Living Room as an experience, a “happening” of sorts. Recognizing that what he enjoys most in life is connecting with others and building long-lasting relationships, he shares a transformational and heartfelt kindness and compassion with staff and members alike.

As someone in long-term recovery, John sees the critical importance in being welcomed, cared for and ultimately forgiven on the path of healing. A major player in the development of all that is The Living Room, John is perhaps most proud of the transformations that occur when people come through its doors. In his own words, “Walking through The Living Room, I am perpetually invited into a place of pure presence; a place that invites me to consider what is right about my life, and ultimately what is good about being me.”

Justina Sullivan

Director of Admissions

Justina Sullivan brings to The Living Room eight years of experience in substance use and mental health treatment. Leading with her strengths of compassion and connection, she has risen through the roles of house manager, behavioral health technician, recovery coach, group facilitator and sober concierge, finding her way to Director of Admissions.

Born and raised in South Florida to a large family riddled with addiction and neglect, Justina was no stranger to hurt and heartache—pain that eventually manifested into a crippling 15- year drug addiction. “I was in so much pain trying to convince myself that this was all life had to offer me. Caught up in the cycle of retraumatization through self sabotage and looking for love in all the wrong places, suddenly it hit me: the very thing I was looking for, I already had. The love I so desperately wanted from the world, I needed to give to myself. That epiphany started my journey back home, to the highest version of myself through unlearning and acceptance of what is. Ever since, I’ve dedicated myself to helping others recognize the divinity living within.”
Justina has been relentless in her recovery and now rests in the idea that the journey is the destination. She is passionate about the benefits of holistic healing and regularly practices yoga, meditation, journaling and breathwork. Proud to be a part of The Living Room, where these practices are core to the philosophy, Justina sees her work as a way to live within the beauty of right now.

Kyle Richards

Executive Director

With a decade of owning and operating two treatment centers, along with years living in and around addiction himself, Kyle found his purpose in recovery long before finding The Living Room. Along the way, he’s supported thousands of people from New Jersey to Delaware to Florida. He’s tripled censuses. Yet he measures success not in numbers but in transformations. At the core of his connection to the cause is a belief that everyone, no matter their circumstance, deserves access to quality care. When he joined us with that philosophy in our first year, he quickly took on a leadership role that includes managing the program’s three sober living houses, supporting the clinical team in member progression decisions, and serving as a personal treatment liaison for members and their families.

As much learned and as it lived, Kyle’s combined professional and personal experience means he leads with a distinct and felt humanity. He brings this depth of understanding to sometimes difficult conversations, in which he doesn’t just hear people out; he listens and leans in. His unique ability to approach uncomfortable situations with both compassion and honesty make him a trusted partner who guides without pressure or judgment.

A real commitment to loving people until they love themselves sits at the center of what Kyle does every day. He removes barriers and relates with heart to make that possible. Turning his own intense pain of feeling trapped and alone into nine years of sobriety and a growing community, today he walks stride for stride with those seeking to live a life where hurt becomes the root of connection. His daughter, Mya, for whom he is determined to break the cycle of generational pain, is unquestionably his greatest joy. Seeing people go from imprisoned to unstuck is a close second.

Terbett Martin | MS, LMFT, LCADC

Director of Family Services

With over 25 years of clinical experience, Terbett is an accomplished individual, group, and family therapist with both a wealth of expertise ranging from interpersonal conflict to generational dynamics, and an insatiable curiosity as a forever student of human connection. Earning her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from North Carolina Central University and her Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Seton Hall University, she developed a uniquely research-informed yet soulful therapeutic approach grounded in attachment theory, emotionally-focused therapy, and family systems work—a combination that engages members and their families in a collaborative process by which they first recognize, then address the behavioral and relational patterns shaping their interactions.

Believing change becomes possible when people are offered a grounded, emotionally safe environment to take vulnerable risks, Terbett is passionate about creating space for honest self-reflection, open communication, and experiential exercises that promote meaningful, lasting transformation. A practical focus on the how—turning insights into action—guides clients through identifying unmet attachment needs toward engaging with others from a place of responsiveness rather than reactivity. Regarding embodied awareness as central to any form of growth, her approach encourages honing attentive presence, intentionally slowing down, and leading with empathy to foster greater relational attunement.

Also a Licensed Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Terbett is especially dedicated to serving those affected by addiction. She understands addiction as a profound disconnector—one that corrodes emotional intimacy, trust and secure relationships, often leading to isolation and suffering. She views recovery not as abstaining from substance use but rediscovering connection, something she enables by empowering clients to reconnect with themselves, with their families, and with the parts of life that are beautiful and joyful. The Living Room’s incomparable way of making members feel like family naturally aligns with Terbett’s early professional roots in community-based behavioral health, along with her spirit of authenticity, openness and warmth. Captivated by the mysteriously powerful magic of synchronicities building as life continuously unfolds, she has both witnessed and experienced firsthand awareness leading to further awareness through moments of interconnected meaning, realization, and discovery. A wholehearted conviction that pain demands to be heard speaks to what she holds as the ultimate destination of any healing journey: not simply surviving but thriving.

Joshua Collins | LCSW, LCADC, CCS

Therapist

Joshua is a licensed clinical social worker and alcohol and drug counselor who believes in the indomitable strength of the human spirit. His client-centered and trauma-informed approach blends professional training with a Buddhist psychology background and nearly two decades of meditation experience to offer grounded, compassionate care. LINK/BRIDGE Josh earned his undergraduate degree in Psychology and Philosophy, as well as his Master’s in Clinical Social Work from Rutgers University. He also completed the Addiction Certificate Training (ACT) program through Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work.

A certified Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist, he also integrates parts-based Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (CBT and DBT, respectively) and mindfulness practices in his therapeutic work. His knowledge of neuroscience enables him to provide the skills, education, and resources to help people learn to soothe their nervous system and connect with their values.

Josh has an extensive history of clinical practice with diverse client populations in a variety of outpatient, inpatient, and in-home settings. Working well across the neurodiversity spectrum, he brings a respectful responsiveness to however clients understand and interpret the world. After four years running a weekly family program for a large treatment center, he is also exceptionally capable in working with families and other supports.

Sober since 2007 and shaped by the experience of a tumultuous childhood, his own lived experience means he understands firsthand how painful moments, periods of upheaval, and feeling misunderstood—from very human differences in brain to nervous system function—can come to define and keep people stuck. He emphasizes getting unstuck not in chasing “growth” but in the simplicity in healing through connection, non-judgment, affirmation, and empowerment.

Fulfilled by his work in behavioral health, Josh cannot overstate how a decade of working as a barista in full-time food service ranks among his proudest professional achievements. His special interests include anime/manga, video-games, litRPG, role playing, and comics. Drawing from his passion for nerd and geek culture, he deeply understands the importance of meaning, narrative, and creativity in the healing journey.

He believes The Living Room offers something truly exceptional and transformative to its members. Eager to contribute his unique experiences and perspectives, he’s equally excited to learn from the people he works along with and serves.

Mark Melillo | MS, LAADC, LCADC

Therapist

Mark is a Licensed Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor in California and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug counselor in New Jersey, an EMDRIA trained Eye Movement and Desensitization Therapy (EMDR) practitioner, as well as a nationally certified and registered yoga teacher. He holds a master’s degree in Human Services from Capella University in Minneapolis, MN and an undergraduate degree in Organizational Behavior and Development from the University of North Texas. Mark utilizes treatment modalities tailored to the individual to identify and address the underlying issues causing pain. Through a combination of talk and holistic therapy—Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Pranotthan Yoga (Utilizes the Koshas), Mindfulness Meditation, Somatic therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and EMDR—Mark provides specialized, effective trauma, addiction and behavioral treatment to clients from all walks of life, diverse cultures and backgrounds.

His substance use and mental health counseling career began in a traditional clinical setting as both a residential clinician/coordinator, outpatient clinician, and as an intensive outpatient director. Mark later came to realize that the insight he gained from his personal and professional yoga practice and training had beneficial applications in his therapeutic work. He has since incorporated increased focus on personal health needs, yoga, mindfulness, and other holistic therapies as nontraditional complements to traditional psychotherapy.

Instead of pacifying the symptoms of dysfunction, Mark assists clients in restoring required structural integrity so that the mind, body and spirit can heal itself. He believes guided meditation and movement re-education are portals to improved self-awareness and vitality. In his work, he has been humbled by the results he has witnessed from relatively simple, practical, and natural techniques in working with clients.

Contemporary science finds common ground in ancestral wisdom time and again, and Mark is honored to be a part of this vital shift as a practitioner. He is incredibly thankful to work alongside the team at The Living Room, where clinicians hold a safe space for clients and each other. His passion for serving has been rekindled by the wisdom and love he recognizes as the golden threads of The Living Room experience.

Henry Nawn | MSW Intern, ADC Intern

Therapist

Henry grew up in Princeton, NJ, attending the Pennington School before graduating from Drew University, where he earned his BA in Business in 2022. Through his college internships and early postgraduate experiences, Henry was introduced to and immediately drawn deeper into the field of human services. He began his professional therapeutic journey working as a counselor in a wilderness therapy program in Utah. Henry then moved into the behavioral services arena, working with adolescents and children for the city of Philadelphia. Having known Dr. Leming for nearly his entire life as a dear friend and mentor, it wasn’t difficult for Henry to find his way to The Living Room.

Playing a lead role in managing alumni relations, he plans and hosts both in-person and virtual events that keep members engaged in The Living Room community even after they complete treatment. These gatherings allow former members to remain actively connected to the practices and people that have supported their healing.

Beyond alumni engagement, his role now spans group and individual therapy. His therapeutic style is firmly grounded in The Living Room’s philosophy of compassion, understanding, and the belief there’s nothing to fix. In his work with members, he explores Internal Family Systems (IFS), Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Radical Acceptance to foster awareness and presence.

Henry’s experience at The Living Room has allowed him to continue a process of self-exploration and self-acceptance he began nearly a decade ago; and it is this experience that he looks forward to sharing most with our members.

Jason holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education (K–6) and is certified as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities (K–12). His background in education allows him to create meaningful learning experiences tailored to each individual’s strengths and challenges.

As a former member of The Living Room, Jason has a deep personal connection to the organization’s mission. He credits this place for changing life entirely, saying “it gave me my life back. The program opened my eyes, to experience life in the present moment and to love it as it is. I learned to love all parts of me—the skillful and unskillful—and rediscover the parts of me that have been unloved and locked away.” Jason’s own journey through substance abuse and recovery allows him to bring authenticity, empathy, and an ability to connect with others in a genuine and impactful way.

Prior to his career in education, Jason played college football at Kean University, where he developed a strong foundation in discipline, resilience, and teamwork—qualities that continue to shape his professional and personal approach today.

Mindi Hinton

Admissions Coordinator

Mindi Hinton brings over 11 years of experience in substance use and mental health
treatment, supported by a Bachelor of Applied Science in Healthcare Management and
Supervision. Throughout her career, she has held key roles including Intake Coordinator,
Billing & Collections Supervisor for multiple treatment centers, and Supervisor of Billing
& Collections for a laboratory. She has also worked directly with individuals seeking care,
guiding them through the admissions process with empathy, professionalism, and a strong
understanding of their needs. Her integrity and compassion make her a valued member of
the team here at The Living Room.

Prior to transitioning into the behavioral health field, Mindi spent 27 years in cosmetology.
After a life-changing cancer diagnosis, she made the decision to return to college and
pursue a new path dedicated to helping others.

Mindi has also navigated her own mental health challenges, including depression and
anxiety from a young age. Raised in an environment where mental health was often viewed
through a “mind over matter” lens, she did not initially receive the support she needed,
which contributed to a period of substance use. With proper diagnosis and treatment, she
has since achieved a stable, healthy, and fulfilling life.

Committed to ongoing personal growth, Mindi incorporates practices such as yoga and
meditation into her daily routine. She brings both professional expertise and lived
experience to her work, offering genuine empathy, insight, and support to those beginning
their recovery journey

Sam Mullins

Admissions Coordinator

Sam brings authenticity, compassion, and understanding to her role at The Living Room through both her personal journey and her passion for helping others heal. Having experienced addiction and recovery firsthand, she understands how isolating, overwhelming, and emotional the process of asking for help can be—not only for the individual struggling, but for the families who love them as well.

After overcoming opioid addiction and rebuilding her own life in recovery, Sam developed a deep commitment to supporting others as they navigate their own paths toward healing. Her ability to connect with people comes from a place of genuine understanding, empathy, and lived truth rather than judgment or clinical distance. She was drawn to The Living Room because of its compassionate, whole-person approach to care and its commitment to creating an environment where people can heal with dignity, connection, and support.

Known for her warmth, honesty, and calming presence, Samantha strives to ensure that every person and family she speaks with feels less alone and more hopeful about what comes next.

Samantha Cordero

Admissions Coordinator

I am a behavioral health professional with experience supporting individuals navigating mental health and substance use challenges across multiple levels of care. I have worked as a Registered Behavioral Technician for one year, spent four years at Princeton House, and have been part of The Living Room (TLR) team for the past year. These experiences have allowed me to develop a strong foundation in client-centered care, crisis support, and therapeutic engagement across diverse populations.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with Honors and a 4.0 GPA, along with minors in Counseling and Anthropology, which have contributed to my holistic understanding of human behavior. I take my education very seriously and am currently pursuing my Master of Social Work (MSW), with an anticipated graduation in early 2027.

Both my personal and professional experiences with mental health and addiction have deeply influenced my approach to care. I strive to provide empathetic, well-rounded support that considers the whole person. I understand that life can be challenging, and my goal is to be a steady source of support for individuals during difficult times, helping them feel seen, heard, and understood.

At The Living Room, I serve many roles including Social Work Intern and Group Facilitator,  Intake Coordinator, and Peer Support, stepping into whatever role is needed to best support clients and the team. My primary areas of focus include mental health and addiction.

The Living Room is especially meaningful to me because of its culture. It truly feels like a family—one where voices are valued, vulnerability is embraced as strength, and genuine connection is at the center of the work we do.

My path has not been linear, and I believe that is one of my greatest strengths. Life’s challenges—its detours, obstacles, and unexpected turns—have shaped my resilience and perspective. I bring that understanding into my work, encouraging others to see that even when the journey is difficult, growth and purpose can still emerge.

Kristen Furfero

Office & HR Manager

Kristen brings over 10 years of dedicated experience in office administration with a background in financial planning, laboratory operations, marketing, client services, medical billing and department supervision. Known for her exceptional organizational skills and teamwork, at The Living Room she oversees daily business functions, manages new hire onboarding, and collaborates with leadership and staff to deliver an unmatched experience from a member’s first step into treatment.

Kristen’s previous position, which involved providing testing to patients in substance use treatment in the toxicology laboratory setting, opened her eyes to the importance of medical care for addictions. Perhaps more importantly, she recognized that while essential, medical care was nowhere near sufficient if people were to truly heal.

Having experienced the impact of addiction and mental health struggles within her own family, Kristen is thankful to have the opportunity to now work at a place that “feels more like home.” She is thrilled knowing that The Living Room family welcomes its members with warm and open arms, embracing the truth that recovery is possible!

From previously working behind the scenes, to now working with members directly, Kristen finds her role incredibly rewarding and intends to make each member who walks through The Living Room’s doors feel that they matter.

Mànuel Colón

Intake Coordinator & Case Manager

Raised in New Brunswick, NJ, Mànuel went on to earn his Addiction Studies Certification from Middlesex College and launch into a career in recovery. He began his professional therapeutic journey as a counseling intern at a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) clinic in Cliffwood Beach, NJ, where he recognized he had found his soul’s purpose. Continuing to expand his expertise in the field, Mànuel now has over three years of experience working in substance use care and MAT, as well as long-term residential and intensive outpatient programs.

Prior to entering the addiction treatment space, Mànuel worked in human services for seven years, managing a 14-bed youth shelter that provided outreach and prevention for homeless and neglected youth throughout central NJ. He was drawn into human services from his own lived experience as a homeless youth in active addiction. Today, in long-term recovery, Mànuel is certain that he is where he belongs at The Living Room. He sees his work here as an opportunity to walk hand-in-hand with others as they navigate the experience of “waking up” and witness the beauty in the pains of addiction and mental health difficulties. Perhaps more than anything, he hopes the work he does will help create a wiser and kinder world, something that carries all the more significance having recently adopted his daughter, Emmabell.

Into his mid-30s, Matt experienced high levels of anxiety, bouts of depression, and struggled with excessive alcohol and drug use—personal experiences that now deeply inform his professional perspective in supporting others. His life started to shift when he began practicing mindfulness, self-compassion and meditation practices regularly. This work helped him develop a newfound awareness of his thoughts, emotions, and the intelligence of the body. Today, these techniques complement Matt’s work at The Living Room, where he brings true understanding, dedication to wellness in all forms, and a subtly comforting energy that, together, invite others to embrace that the kind of transformation he’s witnessed in himself is just as possible for themselves.

Melina Towlen

Operations Manager

As Operations Manager at The Living Room, Melina brings a background rooted in supporting individuals through both academic and personal challenges, gaining their confidence to walk alongside their struggles. Prior to joining our team, while earning her bachelor’s degree in English, she worked collaboratively with college students as an academic coach and tutor. In this role she supported those who were struggling not only with their coursework but also with the accompanying mental and emotional stress. As a result she developed a genuine appreciation for the connection between mental health and daily life.

Since entering the behavioral health field in early 2025, Melina’s approach is grounded in patience, holding space through listening, and meeting people where they are. She strives to create an environment where individuals feel comfortable expressing themselves and are encouraged to find a deeper understanding of the different parts of themselves, recognizing that each part has a purpose.

Melina’s connection to this work is also personal. Having faced her own mental health challenges, she understands how overwhelming those times can be. During some of her most difficult moments, meditation became a practice that helped her turn inward with greater awareness and compassion. That lived experience largely drives her commitment to this work today. The Living Room is meaningful to her because it represents a space where people can come as they are and receive genuine support. Drawing from both professional experience and personal understanding, Melina aims to create space for others to go on their journey at The Living Room with curiosity and openness.

Jess Galvano

Marketing & Brand Manager

A creative communicator, Jess thrives where the interplay of words and visuals makes the invisible, the untold, not just seen or heard but felt. She views branding as translation: the art of turning otherwise silent stories into something shared, of turning clichés into language that cuts through and connects. Well-versed in both brand expression and personal healing, Jess brings over 15 years of working exclusively with mission-driven organizations ranging from global learning to wellness. Her blended experience naturally lends itself to building brands that are required to exist within a system but whose look and feel are anything but sterilely systemic.

Jess is, quite literally, putting her BA in English and minor in Journalism & Editorial Design from Boston University to work capturing the essence of The Living Room. Knowing the depths of addiction and later rediscovering the power in presence as a member herself, Jess knows firsthand the message here isn’t shy. It doesn’t flinch. It’s as real as the pain that brings people to treatment. Speaking a language that’s raw, human, and yet eloquently full of care, The Living Room’s voice rings with a felt resonance—one whose echoes she is eager to carry to those seeking not to recover what was, but to openly embrace what is and awaken to the wonder of what is yet to come.

Balancing her natural intensity with meditative moments often spent outdoors, Jess settles into a soundtrack and rhythm of rolling waves when beachcombing with her dog, Sparrow.
