August Leming, PhD

Founder, CEO

Dr. August Leming is a lifelong student of the human experience. He learned early on that the world can sometimes be a dangerous place. A history of childhood trauma and difficulty making sense of his experience provided fertile ground for a much needed deeper look at what this life has to offer. Earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy from Columbia University, August was introduced to the study of Buddhism in 1989 under Robert Thurman. Unbeknownst to him, this introduction would play a major part in his life for decades to come.

For several years after graduation, August traveled the globe in his efforts to find some semblance of peace. A number of continents later, he found himself back home, exhausted from years of alcohol and drug use and abuse. Compulsivity having taken its toll, August returned at 360 pounds, jobless and without direction. A simple scene from Shawshank Redemption motivated him to turn his not yet identified alcoholic obsession towards bodybuilding. Three years later, he stood at 200 pounds, eating disordered, no less fearful but now capable of selling his obsession as, of all things, a health coach.

Alcohol would soon become a part of the picture again, and by the age of 28, August had finally reached bottom. Getting sober meant going back to school, a safer place, as he was always a high achieving academic. What was intended to be a two-year Masters program at Seton Hall University, evolved into a seven-year Doctorate in Counseling Psychology. While studying at Seton Hall, August served as an Adjunct Professor, teaching Child Psychology, Adolescent Psychology and Statistics on both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He did extensive research in adolescent aggression, racial identity, spirituality in counseling, meditation and personality development. As part of his Doctoral training, August worked in the NJ prison system where he developed a Family Services Program and worked extensively with populations impacted by violence, trauma and addiction. Dr. Leming’s dissertation, “Happy, Joyous and Free: An Exploration of the Relationship between Affiliation with Alcoholics Anonymous and Quality of Life” allowed for extensive research into the history, effectiveness and underlying methodology of 12 Step Recovery programs.

Sober since 2000, August has continued his Buddhist studies from his first beginnings in 1989. He has attended multiple week-long retreats and has taught meditation around the world in his work with nonprofits, corporations, universities and athletic programs. His first-of-its-kind compassion-based model of high performance has allowed him to work with organizations across the United States, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and New Zealand. August has been an invited speaker at Yale University, Princeton University, Williams College, University of Virginia, Bucknell University and University of Washington, among many other academic institutions. While educated at some of the country’s most elite colleges and universities, August values the wisdom of life experience above all else. Knowledge can be helpful, but wisdom is useful. Being given the opportunity to both learn from his confusion and to experience what the world offers as success and failure, August understands an uncommonly wide range of human experiences.
The Living Room at Princeton and its team of amazing human beings is Dr. Leming’s greatest joy. The Living Room was established to provide sanctuary for clinicians and clients alike. It’s a physical space that invites spiritual healing through the constant reminder that “There’s nowhere to go.” More than anything else, August’s strange and oftentimes painful journey has made one thing very clear: this very moment is all we have. The Living Room’s greatest hope is that our team and members will learn to commit more fully to the experience of now and learn to meet it with a kind and loving heart.. regardless of what it holds.

Nikali serves as Chief Operating Officer at The Living Room, where she focuses on building the structure, systems, and team culture that bring the organization’s mission to life each day. With a 20+-year background in operations and leadership across hospitality, food service, and nonprofit environments, she is passionate about creating spaces that balance excellence with genuine human connection.

Nikali holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a double major in Marketing and Management from Georgetown University—educational experience that equips her with a strong foundation in leadership, organizational strategy, and building experiences that meaningfully serve people. Earlier in her career, she spent more than eight years working in organizations that support underserved communities, where she developed a deep respect for the importance of access, dignity, and thoughtful care.

Her work is further shaped by her personal journey at The Living Room, as well as her own commitment to growth and recovery. Daily practices such as meditation, reflection, and gratitude continue to ground her approach both personally and professionally, and inform the way she shows up for others.

Dr. Tamer Wasseff

Medical Director

Dr. Wassef is a double board-certified psychiatrist in general and addiction psychiatry, bringing more than 15 years of clinical and leadership experience to The Living Room at Princeton. His work is deeply rooted in a holistic, collaborative approach to healing, with a strong focus on the mind-body connection and non-pharmacological treatment options for psychiatric conditions, including substance use and eating disorders.

Dr. Wassef completed his fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania and holds certifications from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Throughout his career, he has served as Medical Director for multiple programs, including a medical detox unit and acute inpatient psychiatry unit at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, and the Eating Disorder Unit at Princeton University Medical Center. He also served as Acting Chair of the Psychiatry Department at Christ Hospital.

At The Living Room, Dr. Wassef applies his expertise in addiction psychiatry to support individuals navigating substance use challenges. He brings a compassionate, trauma-informed lens to care, aiming to create a safe and supportive environment where healing can take place.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Wassef has lectured nationally on substance abuse, eating disorders, and pain management in chemically dependent patients. His research has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, reflecting his ongoing commitment to advancing the field of addiction treatment.

Shweta is a compassionate and skilled therapist dedicated to fostering healing and growth in her clients. A graduate of Rutgers University’s Master of Social Work program, she has extensive experience working across all levels of care, from outpatient services to inpatient treatment. Her diverse background allows her to address a wide range of mental health conditions, including trauma, anxiety, depression, OCD and others.

Shweta holds professional licenses as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC). As a certified clinical supervisor, she takes pride in mentoring aspiring therapists and sharing her knowledge. Recently, she completed her training in brainspotting and is actively pursuing certification in this transformative approach, which focuses on processing trauma and emotional distress.

Believing that self-care is vital to effective therapy, Shweta prioritizes fitness and healthy eating in her own life. This commitment not only helps her maintain balance but also enables her to bring a sense of peace and positivity into her sessions. Equally dedicated to continued learning, she’s inspired to explore various therapeutic modalities, including CBT, DBT, and mindfulness-based techniques, while also staying true to her strengths-based and psychodynamic approaches.

Shweta’s warmth and empathy creates a safe space for clients to explore their thoughts and feelings, empowering them to achieve their goals and find balance in their lives as they navigate their challenges. Justina Sullivan

Director of Admissions

Justina brings to The Living Room eight years of experience in substance use and mental health treatment. Leading with her strengths of compassion and connection, she has risen through the roles of house manager, behavioral health technician, recovery coach, group facilitator and sober concierge, finding her way to Director of Admissions.

Born and raised in South Florida to a large family riddled with addiction and neglect, Justina was no stranger to hurt and heartache—pain that eventually manifested into a crippling 15-year drug addiction. “I was in so much pain trying to convince myself that this was all life had to offer me. Caught up in the cycle of retraumatization through self sabotage and looking for love in all the wrong places, suddenly it hit me: the very thing I was looking for, I already had. The love I so desperately wanted from the world, I needed to give to myself. That epiphany started my journey back home, to the highest version of myself through unlearning and acceptance of what is. Ever since, I’ve dedicated myself to helping others recognize the divinity living within.”

Justina has been relentless in her recovery and now rests in the idea that the journey is the destination. She is passionate about the benefits of holistic healing and regularly practices yoga, meditation, journaling and breathwork. Proud to be a part of The Living Room, where these practices are core to the philosophy, Justina sees her work as a way to live within the beauty of right now.

Kyle Richards

Executive Director

With a decade of experience owning and operating two treatment centers, along with years living in and around addiction himself, Kyle found his purpose in recovery long before finding The Living Room. Along the way, he’s supported thousands of people from New Jersey to Delaware to Florida. He’s tripled censuses. Yet he measures success not in numbers but in transformations. At the core of his connection to the cause is a belief that everyone, no matter their circumstance, deserves access to quality care. When he joined us with that philosophy in our first year, he quickly took on a leadership role that includes managing the program’s three sober living houses, supporting the clinical team in member progression decisions, and serving as a personal treatment liaison for members and their families.

As much learned and as it lived, Kyle’s combined professional and personal experience means he leads with a distinct and felt humanity. He brings this depth of understanding to sometimes difficult conversations, in which he doesn’t just hear people out; he listens and leans in. His unique ability to approach uncomfortable situations with both compassion and honesty make him a trusted partner who guides without pressure or judgment.

A real commitment to loving people until they love themselves sits at the center of what Kyle does every day. He removes barriers and relates with heart to make that possible. Turning his own intense pain of feeling trapped and alone into nine years of sobriety and a growing community, today he walks stride for stride with those seeking to live a life where hurt becomes the root of connection. His daughter, Mya, for whom he is determined to break the cycle of generational pain, is unquestionably his greatest joy. Seeing people go from imprisoned to unstuck is a close second.

Terbett Martin | MS, LMFT, LCADC

Director of Family Services

With over 25 years of clinical experience, Terbett is an accomplished individual, group, and family therapist with both a wealth of expertise ranging from interpersonal conflict to generational dynamics, and an insatiable curiosity as a forever student of human connection. Earning her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from North Carolina Central University and her Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Seton Hall University, she developed a uniquely research-informed yet soulful therapeutic approach grounded in attachment theory, emotionally-focused therapy, and family systems work—a combination that engages members and their families in a collaborative process by which they first recognize, then address the behavioral and relational patterns shaping their interactions.

Believing change becomes possible when people are offered a grounded, emotionally safe environment to take vulnerable risks, Terbett is passionate about creating space for honest self-reflection, open communication, and experiential exercises that promote meaningful, lasting transformation. A practical focus on the how—turning insights into action—guides clients through identifying unmet attachment needs toward engaging with others from a place of responsiveness rather than reactivity. Regarding embodied awareness as central to any form of growth, her approach encourages honing attentive presence, intentionally slowing down, and leading with empathy to foster greater relational attunement.

Also a Licensed Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Terbett is especially dedicated to serving those affected by addiction. She understands addiction as a profound disconnector—one that corrodes emotional intimacy, trust and secure relationships, often leading to isolation and suffering. She views recovery not as abstaining from substance use but rediscovering connection, something she enables by empowering clients to reconnect with themselves, with their families, and with the parts of life that are beautiful and joyful.

The Living Room’s incomparable way of making members feel like family naturally aligns with Terbett’s early professional roots in community-based behavioral health, along with her spirit of authenticity, openness and warmth. Captivated by the mysteriously powerful magic of synchronicities building as life continuously unfolds, she has both witnessed and experienced firsthand awareness leading to further awareness through moments of interconnected meaning, realization, and discovery. He began his professional therapeutic journey as a counseling intern at a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) clinic in Cliffwood Beach, NJ, where he recognized he had found his soul’s purpose. Continuing to expand his expertise in the field, Mànuel now has over three years of experience working in substance use care and MAT, as well as long-term residential and intensive outpatient programs.

Prior to entering the addiction treatment space, Mànuel worked in human services for seven years, managing a 14-bed youth shelter that provided outreach and prevention for homeless and neglected youth throughout central NJ. He was drawn into human services from his own lived experience as a homeless youth in active addiction. Today, in long-term recovery, Mànuel is certain that he is where he belongs at The Living Room. He sees his work here as an opportunity to walk hand-in-hand with others as they navigate the experience of “waking up” and witness the beauty in the pains of addiction and mental health difficulties. Perhaps more than anything, he hopes the work he does will help create a wiser and kinder world, something that carries all the more significance having recently adopted his daughter, Emmabell.

Samantha is a behavioral health professional with experience supporting individuals across multiple levels of care as they navigate mental health and substance use challenges. Prior to joining The Living Room in August 2025, she spent four years working at a local treatment facility and another year as a Registered Behavioral Technician. These roles helped her develop a strong foundation in client-centered care, crisis intervention, and therapeutic engagement with diverse populations.

Earning her bachelor’s degree with honors, a major in Psychology, and minors in Counseling and Anthropology contributes to her holistic understanding of human behavior. Samantha is continuing her education by pursuing her Master of Social Work, with an anticipated graduation in early 2027.

Her approach to care is shaped by both her professional background and lived experience with mental health and addiction. Samantha recognizes that life can be complex and challenging, and she strives to be a steady, compassionate presence for individuals during difficult times. Her goal is to help clients feel truly understood while providing empathetic, well-rounded care that honors the whole person.

At The Living Room, Samantha has many roles including Social Work Intern, Group Facilitator, Intake Coordinator, and Peer Support, stepping into whatever role is needed to best support members and the team. With a primary focus in mental health and addiction, The Living Room holds special meaning for Samantha because of its family-feel culture. She values it as a place where voices are heard, vulnerability is embraced as a strength, and genuine connection is central to the work.

Tara brings over six years of operations, admissions, and director-level housing experience, along with a Bachelor of Science in HR & Business Administration from Rider University. Joining the team in June 2025, she now coordinates HR for Housing, a role that includes payroll, benefits, and onboarding for employees working at The Living Room’s sober living residences. Tara’s grace under pressure allows her to meet the high-volume, often real-time transportation needs of a growing member community. Her expertise in patient management systems ensures accurate attendance records and required testing collection—essentials for smooth program operations.

With seven years of sobriety, Tara’s own recovery journey underpins her commitment to making The Living Room a supportive, welcoming environment. She shares her adaptability, genuine caring, and warm approachability with both members and staff, showing up with those very human “parts” she regards as foundational to healing.

Now serving as an Admissions Coordinator at The Living Room, Kristen made the intentional decision to leave a leadership role and return to the front lines, where she feels most aligned and fulfilled: supporting individuals in real time as they take their first steps toward healing.

Kristen specializes in guiding individuals through the admissions process, reducing barriers to care, and ensuring each person feels heard, supported, and understood from the very first interaction. Kristen is proud to be part of The Living Room, where the mission aligns deeply with her belief that compassionate, accessible care can truly change lives. She is committed to showing up authentically each day, meeting people where they are, and helping them feel less alone in the process.

After overcoming opioid addiction and rebuilding her own life in recovery, Sam developed a deep commitment to supporting others as they navigate their own paths toward healing. Her ability to connect with people comes from a place of genuine understanding, empathy, and lived truth rather than judgment or clinical distance. She believes some of the most meaningful support comes from simply making people feel safe, heard, and understood during moments when they may feel hopeless or uncertain.

Sam is passionate about helping individuals see that recovery is possible and that healing is about far more than just sobriety; it is about rediscovering self-worth, rebuilding relationships, and learning how to live fully again.
